Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: 32nd Infantry Regiment; 75th Infantry Division; 1st Army, ETO; 2nd Army; 17th Infantry Regiment; 7th Infantry Division; U.S. Army Infantry School; U.S. Continental Army Command (CONARC); 3rd Army. General description of the collection: The Herbert B. Powell collection includes documents on Powell's Army service (1919-1963) and that of ambassador to New Zealand (1963-1967). Papers consist of correspondence (1920s-1990s); service records (1919-1963); material related to Powell's participation in the Coral Sea Commemoration (April-May 1961); and memorandums, pamphlets, and ephemera related to Powell's work in military and government service. There are group photographs of: the officers of the 7th Infantry Division with the cast of the silent movie, THE PATENT LEATHER KID, filmed in 1927 at Fort Lewis, Washington; officers of the 38th Infantry Division, Camp Douglas, Utah (1935); officers of the 6th Infantry Division at Camp Jackson, South Carolina (1939); staff of the 2nd Army, Fort Meade, Maryland (1947); and the service commanders during the Cuban Missile Crisis with President John F. Kennedy (October 1962). There is a box of correspondence, speeches, clippings, and other materials relating to the life of Beryl King Powell.

Herbert Butler Powell was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He was commissioned into the Army in 1926. During World War II (WWII), he served in the European Theater of Operations (ETO); was a battalion commander of the 32nd Infantry, 1941-1942; was chief of staff (CofS), 75th Infantry Division, 1943-1945, and was deputy, G-1 First (1st) Army Europe, 1945-1946.
